Draft — not yet legally reviewed
This text describes how PlayVerdicts works today. It is a template and must be reviewed by a qualified lawyer, and every bracketed field filled in, before the site launches publicly.
In short
- You can use PlayVerdicts without an account. Then nothing about you is sent to us.
- An account is optional. If you create one, we store your email address, your watchlist, the PC specs you enter, your private profile (display name, avatar choice and gaming preferences) and any price alerts you set, so they can follow you between devices and we can email you. There is no password.
- No advertising, no analytics and no tracking scripts. Nothing is sold or shared for marketing.
- The only cookie is a sign-in cookie, and only if you sign in.
- Pages load without requests to third-party servers: fonts and game images are served from PlayVerdicts itself.
- You can download or delete everything we hold about you at any time from your account page.
Without an account: what stays on your device
To make the watchlist, the comparison tray and the requirements check work, your browser's local storage holds small records under the keys gameproof:watchlist, gameproof:compare and gameproof:hardware (game identifiers; the operating system, memory, free disk space and graphics class you choose; and, under gameproof:profile, the profile details above). This data never leaves your browser unless you sign in (see below), is only used for those features, and can be removed at any time by clearing the site's data in your browser. Because it is strictly needed for features you ask for, it does not need a consent banner under the usual rules. Confirm this with your advisor for your jurisdiction.
With an account
What we store: your email address, when you created the account and last signed in, your watchlist, your price alerts (which game, which condition, and when we last emailed you about it), your PC specs and your profile (a display name, a generated avatar from a fixed set, and the platforms, genres, play style and budget you pick). The profile is private: nobody else can see it, and there is no image upload. Your comparison picks are not stored on the server.
Why: to let you sign in, to sync the watchlist, PC specs and profile between your devices, to show you how well games fit your tastes, to send the price-alert emails you ask for, and to keep the service secure. We do not use this data for anything else.
How you sign in: you enter your email address and we send a one-time link. It works once and expires after 15 minutes. We keep only a hash of the link and of your session, never the values themselves.
Price alerts: if you set an alert, we email you at your account address when the game's Steam price reaches the condition you chose: at most one email per drop, and at most one every three days for the same game. Every email has a link that stops that alert without signing in, and you can remove alerts on the account page. We send nothing else by email: no newsletters and no marketing.
Email provider: sign-in and price-alert emails are sent through , which processes your address only to deliver them.
How long: a sign-in session lasts 30 days unless you sign out. Unused sign-in links are deleted after a day. Your account data stays until you delete the account. To limit abuse we keep a short-lived, salted hash of your IP address (not the address itself) for sign-in rate limits, deleted after a day.
Your controls: on the account page you can download everything we store, sign out, and permanently delete the account. Deleting removes your email, watchlist, PC specs, profile and price alerts from our database straight away. Signing out also removes the synced watchlist, PC specs and profile from the device you are using, so a shared computer keeps nothing.
Cookies
When you sign in we set one cookie, gp_session (__Host-gp_session on the live site). It holds a random session identifier, is not readable by scripts, is sent only to PlayVerdicts, and expires after 30 days or when you sign out. It is strictly necessary for the sign-in to work. No other cookies are set.
Forms
The price-alert box on a game page is only available when you are signed in. It uses the email address of your account and asks for nothing else: you choose the condition (a lowest-price check or a price you name), and that choice is stored with your account as described above. No other form on the site sends data to us.
Server logs
Like any website, the hosting provider () may process technical request data such as IP address, time and requested page, for security and operation. PlayVerdicts itself does not build profiles from it.
Data fetched on your behalf, not about you
Game information, Steam reviews, patch announcements and prices are fetched by PlayVerdicts's own server from Steam and IsThereAnyDeal. Your browser does not contact them when you view a page, and nothing about you is sent to them.
Links to other sites
Store, trailer and announcement links open third-party sites (for example Steam, GOG, YouTube and IsThereAnyDeal). Once you follow a link, that site's own privacy policy applies.
